As we celebrate Women’s history this month, it’s important to acknowledge how far a woman has come and the changes she has undergone in society. A woman has come a long way in society. In the past, a woman couldn’t vote, couldn’t be protected from domestic violence, and had no power to make a decision. However, over the years, being a woman has changed.
Until recently, Muslim women in Saudi Arabia were allowed to drive and leave their homes without a man! Besides, the recent American elections outcome that saw a woman occupy a high position in government had people discussing how women’s role has changed even in politics. Women in high political offices are now encouraging girls that nothing should be off-limits for them.
Yes, a woman’s role in society has changed because women are now becoming literate, especially when it comes to pursuing higher education. A woman’s role is no longer confined to domestic chores as today a woman plays a huge role in making decisions in the home, office, and about her life! Roles that were entrusted to men by society.
A woman’s role in society has changed through the following ways:
- Education – As mentioned above, most women are getting educated hence opening the career opportunity for them to work. Through their literacy, a woman can now make family decisions. A woman is no longer staying at home full-time.
- Leadership and Politics – Women have become ambitious. From the local to national levels, women are taking up leadership roles in politics. People can now believe that a woman can be a leader through the changing role of women and its impacts worldwide, hence transforming the status quo.
- Fighting for human rights –Women today have a voice, unlike in the past. Through this voice, women are fighting against issues that don’t favor them, such as domestic violence and inequality. Today, corporate laws allow women to become leaders at their place of work. Through gender rights activism, women have been at the forefront of fighting for inclusivity in all social areas.
- Reproductive rights – Women today give birth to one or two children. They also give birth when they are ready and at a mature age. Unlike in the past when the man and society dictate how many children a woman should give birth to, today, a woman has the freedom to bear a child, even before or without marriage.
There are endless ways that we can list how a woman’s role in society has changed. To all the women making these possible, here is to the next years of changing women!
